MTV is attempting to distract from its increasingly tenuous relationship with music by focusing instead on internet culture, memes and all, in the company’s O___ Music Awards, which yesterday announced the categories and nominees.

Categories include irreverent ones like Fan Army FTW, Best Music Hashtag Meme and Favorite F**k Yeah Tumblr alongside more ‘traditional’ ones such as Innovative Artist and Best Performance Series.

Lady Gaga and Odd Future’s Tyler the Creator lead the pack with three nominations each, followed by Kanye West, The Flaming Lips and Nicki Minaj with two nominations apiece. Other notable nominees include the rooster from Death Metal Rooster; Justin Bieber for the Favorite Animated GIF category; and Antoine Dodson & Gregory Brothers’ “Bed Intruder Song” under the Funniest Music Short category.

“The time has come to celebrate and award achievements and innovations in this space with an experimental, ever-evolving, unorthodox and forward-facing event,” MTV executive vice president for digital media Dermot McCormack said in a statement.

Given the emphasis on online, the awards will accept votes from fans, who can vote either via social media or through a mobile voting site. The awards ceremony will be held 28 April across MTV.com, VH1.com, LogoTV.com and will include “heavy integration” with social media, MTV said.
