In the midst of battle against Japanese forces, the army defending Jinjuseong Fortress sent signals to its back-up forces outside the fortress by flying lantern-kites in the sky or floating lamplights on the Namgang River. Such lights were not only a means of communication, but were also a tactic to block Japanese forces from crossing the river.Koreans consider the Jinjuseong Battle, fought during the Imjin War, as one of the most difficult times in the nation’s history. Today the Jinju Namgang Yudeung Festival is held to pay tribute to the 70,000 soldiers killed in the battle, as well as to promote tourism in the beautiful city of Jinju.Festival Program: Held at the Namgang Waterfront across from Jinjuseong Chokseongnu, the lanterns create a superb view. During the festival, visitors will see exhibits such as traditional lanterns together with various lanterns from around the world. There is also an exhibit of creative lanterns. You may also want to visit the traditional hanji lantern exhibit, which features a stone lantern, wooden fish lantern, and big drum lantern. There is also a photo zone where you can take memorable pictures next to exhibited lanterns. In addition, there are hands-on programs in which participants can fly lanterns from different countries or make their own lanterns to hang in a designated area. As an auxiliary event, visitors can see the Jinju National Traditional Bull Fight or get involved in folk games such as shuttlecock, traditional swing, or the creative mask dance performance.
Festival Highlight: The lanterns that fill the river with colorful lights create a spectacular view. It is believed that if you write a wish on your lantern and send it floating downriver, the wish will come true, so don’t miss this chance. The most beautiful view is after sunset. In the evening, a fireworks display adds to the beauty of the lanterns, so it is best to find a spot as close as possible to enjoy the event late into the night.
